Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) questions on your Tax Return

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requires answers to a few questions while filing your tax return:

  1. As a Canadian citizen, does the taxpayer authorize the CRA to provide his/her name, address, date of birth, and citizenship to Elections Canada to update his/her information on the National Register of Electors or, if he or she is aged 14 to 17, to update the Register of Future Electors?

Unless you specify otherwise, we will indicate YES.

  2. Did the taxpayer own or hold foreign property at any time in the previous year with a total cost of more than CAN$100,000?

Unless you specify otherwise, we will indicate NO.

NOTE that there is a significant penalty for not declaring foreign property.

  3. Does the taxpayer authorize the CRA to provide his or her name and email address to Ontario Health so that Ontario Health (Trillium Gift of Life) may contact the taxpayer or send him or her information about organ and tissue donation?

Unless you specify otherwise, we will indicate NO.

  4. Did the taxpayer open a First Home Savings Account (FHSA)?

Unless you specify otherwise, we will indicate NO.

A Note about Organ and Tissue Donation from the CRA

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is helping increase the visibility of organ and tissue donor registries across the country.

When filing taxes for the 2024 tax year, Ontario and Nunavut residents (or their tax preparer with the client’s permission) can tick a box on their income tax and benefit return to indicate they want to receive information from their provincial/territorial government about becoming organ and tissue donors.

By ticking the box, taxpayers are not consenting to become organ and tissue donors. They are authorizing the disclosure of limited personal information to the province/territory (email address in the case of Ontario residents and name, address, and email address in the case of Nunavut residents). The province/territory will reach out to taxpayers who have signalled their interest and provide them with more information about organ and tissue donation.

Less than one third of Canadians are registered organ and tissue donors. As most Canadians are required to file an income tax and benefit return each year, the CRA is helping to raise public awareness about organ and tissue donation.
